Concentration and Certificate Program
The
Concentration and Certificate in Community Media and Technology
are designed to provide students with the key competencies
they need to incorporate a range of multi-media tools into
their primary responsibilities, be they labor activists, community
organizers, or agency professionals. Our offerings in Community
Media and Technology are being developed in coordination with
university-wide initiatives in information technology and
distance learning as well as related campus programs and community-based
media and technology partnerships.

Literacy
Can
read, view, and/or listen to a range of mass media critically
in orderto determine how words, sounds, and images are used
to convey meaning and/or to persuade, and can use this knowledge
to describe how the media shape our perceptions of others
and influence our understanding of the social events and phenomena
that comprise our daily lives.

Media
& Community Building
Compare
and contrast a range of existing models and best practices
in the use of media and communication technologies as tools
for community building, and discuss their application to community
projects and/or organizations.

Analyzing
Media
Demonstrate
a systematic knowledge of the workings of a selected range
of media and communication technologies and critically analyze
how they shape perceptions of social issues, public policies,
and cultural groups.

Authoring
Can
demonstrate technical proficiency in multimedia applications
and
utilize such skills in a project related to public and community
service.

Developing
a Media/Technology Strategy
Develop a media/technology strategy designed to achieve the
goals of a public agency or community-based organization working
on a social issue.

and Community Action III
Can
make a well-conceived proposal for participating in a social
change project; can participate and report on one’s
participation in that project; and can assess the effectiveness
of the project, including the effectiveness of one’s
own participation.
