Elaine
has worked for many years in the Human Service field, with victims
of domestic violence, homeless women and children, adolescents,
and in the addictions field. Elaine continues to work part time
as a mental health counselor, but the majority of her work is
in higher education and community development.
Elaine
currently directs a leadership program for immigrants and refugees
at the College of Public and Community Service, UMass Boston.
She is committed to the growth and empowerment of immigrants and
refugees and works to increase access to higher education. Elaine
is particularly interested in how access to higher education and
learner centered, participatory, programs, empower immigrant and
refugee women. Elaine works with students to help them firstly
recognize their leadership ability, and secondly to explore methods
for exercising that leadership, both individually and collectively.
Elaine
also coordinates the development of cohort programs within the
College and currently serves as coordinator of the program for
Women in Community Development.
Elaine
has developed curriculum specific to the CIRCLE Leadership program
and teaches classes on Immigrant and Refugee Leadership Development
and Women and Leadership at the College of Public and Community
Service, and has led student action research on the barriers immigrants
and refugees face in accessing higher education.
Within
the Office of Student Service at the College, Elaine works with
the Administrative Dean in the areas of recruitment, enrollment,
and student advising.
