The
College of Public and Community Service and the University of
Massachusetts Boston were honored on September 26 by the Massachusetts
Rehabilitation Commission (MRC) at a ceremony in the Great Hall of the State House. In
celebration of the Fiftieth Anniversary of the MRC, CPCS received
the Community Partnership Award for Access to Higher Education
for its outstanding contribution to the disability community. Chancellor Michael F. Collins accepted the award from Commissioner Elmer C. Bartles.
In a congratulatory letter to Suzanne Allmendinger, Director of Community Outreach, Chancellor Collins stated: “We are pleased that the tremendous efforts of the faculty and staff of CPCS were publicly recognized during the MRC 50th anniversary celebration. The award underscores the college’s commitment to the university’s core mission of providing access to excellence. As a university committed to our mission, it is wonderful that our mutually rewarding partnership with the MRC and those they serve was publicly celebrated.”
George W. Mitchell, CPCS student and Senior Counselor and Employment Specialist at MRC (Human Services), nominated CPCS for this prestigious award, which considered commitment, advocacy, leadership, and innovation as criteria for selection. The plaque, on display in the Office of Community Outreach, is a testimony to the faculty and staff of the College as well as to CPCS students who are attending and who have graduated through the tuition waiver program with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission.
