Forums
As part
of its commitment to public service, CPCS is committed to providing
a public space for discussion, debate and dialog about important
issues and policy questions. Each year, CPCS organizes and sponsors
a number of events that bring together community people, groups,
professionals and academics to explore current policy debates
or issues. Some examples include:
Colombia:
The Untold Story. Three speakers from Colombia: Carolina
Aldana, a human rights worker, Eder Jair Sanchez, a lawyer
with the National Association of peasant Farmers, and Hector
Giraldo, a trade unionist with the Federation of Public Employees.
U.S.
English Only and Racism: Rolling Back Democracy:
Speakers included Professor Bessie Dendrinos from the University
of Athens, Greece, Professor Jim Cummins, from the University
of Toronto, Canada, and James Crawford, journalist and former
Washington editor of Education Week.
Defending
Palestinian Workers' Rights: A presentation and discussion
with Hasan Barghouthi, Director of the Palestinian Democracy
and Workers' Rights Center.
Thrown
in the hole: Solitary confinement in Massachusetts prisons:
A panel discussion with Criminal Justice Professor Herman
Hemingway, Boston City Councilor Chuck Turner, AFSC Prisoners'
Rights Activist Jamie Suarez Potts, ACLUM Attorney John Reinstein
and Ex-Offender Milton Jones.
Dementia
and Wandering Behavior: A panel discussion with Associate
Professor Nina Silverstein, Gerald Flaherty o fthe Alzheimer's
Association and Dr. Terri Salmons Tobin. A celebration of
the publication of their book, Dementia and Wandering
Behavior: Concern for the Lost Elder (Springer Publishing
