Your Electronic Learning Plan

Your learning plan maps out the competencies that you have selected to do to meet the requirements for your degree, The learning plan is divided into 6 different menus: Levels I - IV (Capstone) for the Core, the Portfolio, and your major/concentration.

As you determine what competencies you will be completing in each of these areas, you should go to your online learning plan and select them from the appropriate menu. Once they are selected on your learning plan, these competencies will be available to you for registration, Through the Electronic Learning Plan you and your advisor will also have an interactive degree audit that maps your progress toward graduation.

You should now be at the Main Menu page for your learning plan (Figure 3 below)

Figure 3

On the right hand side of the screen is some general information about the learning plan. The left side of the screen contains the links you'll need to create your learning plan.

Select the competencies you need

The basic system for selecting the competencies you need is quite simple. Select the area of the learning plan that contains the competency you need (i.e. Core Level I), select the appropriate competency from the menu in that section and Save. Here's how...

Core Skills & Knowledge:

  • Click on the link for Core Skills and Knowledge Level I.  This will take you to the menu for the Level I Core Skills and Knowledge section of your learning plan (Figure 4 below).

Figure 4

Menu for Level I Core Skills and Knowledge

  • Go through the menu for Required Core Competencies by clicking on the arrow on the right side of each of the boxes. The options for each box will appear as a list. Select the one you want by highlighting it. (Note: You should select every required competency even if it transferred in.
  • Sometimes there may be more than one choice in a required competency box like for Reading Life Histories below (figure 5). These are different versions of the competency that are linked to particular programs. Unless you have specific instructions to register for one of the   "special" ones, you should always choose the CORCOM option.

Figure 5

Menu showing more than one choice for required competencies

  • When you have selected all the competencies you want from that particular menu, click on Save. When the selections have been saved, you will receive a prompt that says "Successful Update" at the top of your screen.
  • It should also display information about which of these competencies you have completed or registered for so far to the right of the competency title. For example: If you have Completed a competency or have received a Progress Report, the evaluation outcome and date will be displayed. If you are registered and are awaiting an evaluation, it will show that, too.
  • When you have completed one menu, you may proceed to the other levels in the Core Skills and Knowledge area by selecting the appropriate link from the left side of your screen. Follow the same steps to select and save the competencies you want on your learning plan.

Portfolios

  • When you have completed entering what you want into the Core Skills and Knowledge area, move on to the Portfolio section.
  • Select the Portfolio link from the front page menu on your learning plan.
  • All students should select Portfolios II, and III. Portfolio II is the Level II Applied Technology/Computer Portfolio competency. Portfolio III is the Writing Portfolio. If you select them now, they'll be ready for you when you decide to register for them.
  • When you have selected the two competencies, click on SAVE.

Majors and Concentrations

Now you're ready to move on to the Majors section of the Electronic Learning Plan. For this section, it's very important that you have met with an advisor to insure that you understand your options.

You don't have to make these decisions now. If you're not sure yet which major and concentration you want to do, you can always fill this in section in when you've made a decision down the road.

Declaring a major:

In order to access the competencies in your major, you will first need to declare a major. Your learning plan will list what the University currently has recorded as your major of choice. For new students this information is taken from what you listed on your application.

  • If you are listed with the major you want, you're ready to go in terms of selecting your competencies. To declare or change your major, you must do so at the ONE STOP located in the upper level in the Campus Center. It will take approximately 24 hours for your major to show on your learning plan.

  • Special Instructions for Certificate Students: Some students enter CPCS through the certificate admissions process while they complete enough competencies to gain full admission to the BA program. Students in this category will NOT be able to set up the major area of their learning plan until that conversion happens. You may still start taking competencies in your major, but you will need to fill out a Registration Request form in Student Services or e-mail linda.hardenbergh@umb.edu to post and register for those competencies for you.

When you have your major declared and showing on your learning plan:

  • Click on the link for Major Reqs on the main learning plan menu.
  • You will be directed to a menu of competencies for the major that you have selected. Community Planning is used as the example on Figure 6.

Image of the Majors Menu

  • Select the six required competencies for your major from the list at the top of the page. Click on SAVE.
  • If you have decided on a concentration, select the concentration you want under the Select 1 Track heading.
  • When you have selected a concentration, the competencies that are required in that concentration will be listed in the next four boxes. To add them to your learning plan, select each box and highlight the competency.
  • When you are done filling in what you want from this menu, click on SAVE.
You now have an electronic version of your learning plan. You may continue to update your learning as you go. It is a useful advising tool, so students are advised to keep them up-to-date as you make decisions.

WHAT TO DO IF. . .

If you encounter a glitch in the system (and there are some of these) such as having an incorrect competency listed on the menu of options or you needing to make an approved substitution on your learning plan, simply notify Student Services of the change that needs to be made. We can usually fix the glitches within 24 hours.
