Writing Workshops: Writing Across the Curriculum and Portfolio Preparation Workshops

The Writing Portfolio requires students to select the best written work they have completed in demonstration of Level II and III competencies. In addition, it asks for a reflective essay in which students will both assess the products in their portfolio and reflect on the development of their writing/communication skills throughout the course of their college careers. To help students develop the products they need for the Portfolio and to prepare these products for submission and evaluation, there are two kinds of workshops- Writing Across the Curriculum and Portfolio Preparation. Students are encouraged to take advantage of these FREE workshops to get the support they need to complete the Writing / Communication Portfolio.  Students do not need to register for workshops.  Attend the first session to get on the class list.

The Writing Across the Curriculum Workshops are open to students working at any level of the curriculum. They are designed to help you develop your written products to both help you get the competency you're working on and make sure it meets the Portfolio standards. These workshops run for the full semester. You may bring papers that you are working on in other classes and get focused support for the writing. You do not need to register for these workshops. You should attend the first session to get on the class list.

Writing Across the Curriculum Workshops
Section 1 Wednesday 11:30-12:45 W-1-051 Eisenberg
Section 2 Thursday (starts 9/15) 11:30-12:45 W-1-050 Schwartz
Section 3 Thursday (starts 9/15) 5:30-6:45 W-1-050 Schwartz
Section 4 Wednesday 5:30-6:45 W-1-050 Eisenberg

When you think you have products ready or near-ready for Portfolio evaluation, your should attend a Portfolio Preparation Workshop. The workshop instructor can review your products, help you pick the best ones for submission, and assist you in getting them ready for submission. You will also receive guidance about preparing the Portfolio Cover letter that you are required to submit with your other products. These workshops will run in 4-week cycles, starting the first week of the semester. You don't have to register to attend. When you are ready, just go!

Computer / Technology Competency Support Activities

Applied Technology Self-Assessment
Do you need help assessing what kind of computer / technology support activities make sense for you? All students who have not completed the computer / technology requirements should complete a Computer / Technology Skills Self-Assessment (available in the Office of Student Services). Your self-assessment will be reviewed by the computer faculty at the College and you will receive a recommendation about what level of support makes sense for you to consider in working toward this competency.

Computer Technology Workshops
Intro to Technology Applications Workshop Monday 11:30-2:00 Healey 3-009A - White Lab Rosales
Intro to Technology Applications Workshop Wednesday 7:00-9:30 Healey 3-009B - Blue Lab Santiago

This workshop is intended for students whose computer experience is minimal and who need the time and practice to get up to speed on basic computer skills as a foundation for working at Level II.  The workshop will address computer skills such as: using an operating system, word-processing, e-mail communication, information retrieval, and an introduction to spread sheets.  This workshop will help prepare students to take the Level II Computer Skills workshop and complete the computer competency in another semester.  Because there is no competency linked to this workshop,  you DO NOT need to pre-register and there is no cost to attending the workshop.

Technology Literacy Monday 11:30-2:00 Healey UL-0028 - Green Lab* Reider
Technology Literacy Wednesday 5:30 Healey 3-009A - White Lab Rosado-Torres

*Note: The Green Lab is not available Monday, September 12th - Please go to the Purple Lab H-UL-042
This semester-long workshop will contain modules that help students address the different components of the Level II computer competency.  The modules will also provide support for developing the technology skills that you need when  working on other competencies such as: Community Portraits, Quantitative Reasoning and  Economic Distribution.  Students who take these workshops are expected to have familiarity and solid basic skills in word processing, operating systems, and electronic communication (i.e., e-mail).  Students who successfully complete this workshop will demonstrate the Level II Computer/Technology Skills competency.  To register for the workshop, select Portfolio Level II on your learning plan and register for the section linked to this course.
