Transfer Credit: How it works

If you have attended college before, you will want to know if you have transfer credit for any of the competencies before you make decisions about what to register for.

If you have credits from another college, they will be evaluated for possible transfer credit to CPCS. A transfer evaluation matches your previous credits to competencies in the CPCS curriculum. When a competency transfers in, it means you have completed that competency on your learning plan.

Each transfer situation will be a little different, but there are some basic rules that we follow:

Students Entering CPCS with AA/AS, Nursing or BA Degrees

Students entering CPCS with an approved degree (an AA/AS degree in Liberal Arts, General Studies or a major that matches one of the majors at the College, a three year nursing degree or a BA from another college) will get an automatic transfer of 18 competencies. Your Transfer Evaluation will list the specific 18 competencies that you have been awarded, but the standard package includes:

Core Knowledge & Skills: Level I Core Knowledge & Skills: Level II Core Knowledge & Skills: Level III
  • Reading Life Histories
  • Media Literacy
  • Community Action
  • 2 Level I Electives
  • Participation in Government
  • Quantitative Reasoning

or

  • Historical Change
  • Value Conflicts
    or
  • Making Arguments
  • 2 Level II Electives
  • Critical Practice

or

  • Social Difference
  • 4 Level III Electives

Major:

Students will receive three competencies spread between your major and concentration. The specific competencies will be determined when the student declares a major/concentration.

If you have credits beyond the Associate's, it's possible you may be able to get additional competencies. These additional credits will be evaluated on a course by course basis. If there is a good match between the course and one of the remaining competencies, that transfer credit may be added.

The maximum number of competencies that will be awarded through the standard transfer process is 24. Any additional transfers beyond 24 would need the approval of a faculty evaluator.

Students Entering CPCS with Transfer Credit, but no degree

If you have transfer credits but no degree, we will review your credits on a course by course basis to make the best matches we can between our requirements and what you have taken previously. We can't guarantee that you'll get credit for everything, but we are committed to being as flexible as we can be to make sure you get the most you can for your prior college credits.
