About
Youth Work
Research
shows that a high and increasing number of young people
are living in families, neighborhoods or schools that not
sufficiently care for them or challenge them to achieve
their potential. Finding to ways to ensure that young people
have the skills and attitudes that prepare them to be successful
in society and that communities and institutions have the
programs to support youth development have been ongoing
challenges in the United States.
To
address this need, agencies, communities, educational and
governmental organizations are developing programs that
focus on working with the youth population to increase opportunities
and support positive youth development.
As
a result, Youth Work is a growing and diversified field
in the area of public and community service. Youth workers
are engaged in developing and delivering programs in youth
centers, schools, churches, non-profit agencies, community
organizations, and state and local agencies. As the field
grows, there is increasing demand for trained youth workers
who bring understanding of youth development and youth culture,
as well as models for effective practice in youth work.
Students
not matriculated at the University but who want to develop
their skills and knowledge in the field may sign up for
the Youth Worker Certificate Program. Contact Linda Hardenbergh
